TP-Link Deco W6000 Design

Deco W6000 Design

The TP-Link Deco W6000 are designed to be compact, cylindrical models that come finished in all-white and a single LED status indicator. Each unit is 4.33 x 4.33 x 4.49 inches and just over 1.2 pounds, so relatively small. The LED status light indicates the router’s connection status: red signifies a disconnected network, requiring you to check the router for anomalies. The Deco W6000 units are designed for desktop placement and do not offer wall-mounting options. The Deco W6000’s antennas are internally housed, enhancing its streamlined appearance but limiting user control over signal direction.

TP-Link Deco W6000 Design

The base of the Deco W6000 features only two Gigabit Ethernet ports. As one must be reserved for the primary device’s modem connection, only one wired device can connect directly—a significant drawback for users with multiple wired devices. Furthermore, there are no USB ports for connecting external storage or printers.

TP-Link Deco W6000 Performance

Deco W6000 Performance

In my throughput tests, the TP-Link Deco W6000 did quite well. On 5GHz, we were seeing close to gigabit speeds at close range (within about 2m in the same room) around 930–940Mbps – more or less maxing out its gigabit port. Performance held steady at 680-700Mbps through one wall, and still was to deliver 400Mbps levels through two walls. From maximum range (about 20m + multi walls + around the corner), speeds were a little slower at about 150Mbps, but it was still capable of handling smooth 4K streaming or fast webpage loading. The 2.4Ghz band is more or less for coverage fill-in and support for lower speed devices like IoT. It will push a tiny bit over 200Mbps in close and even after 2 walls you are in the 140–150Mbps range which is fine for your regular devices with low latency (that’s a different issue).

TP-Link says Deco W6000 can cover around 5,000 sq ft (460sq m). My house is around 300 square metres and it gets good signal wherever I am – so no problems there.

TP-Link Deco W6000 Setup

Deco W6000 Setup

Setting up the TP-Link Deco W6000 is curiously simple. It takes less than ten minutes, even for those who have no experience with mesh systems. Setting up your Deco W6000 is as easy as downloading the TP-Link Deco app, wiring the main Deco W6000 to your modem and powering it on. The app then walks you through step by step in creating a TP-Link ID, setting up the name and password of your Wi-Fi network and adding any other Deco devices to your mesh system. Operating instructions are actually very simple.

TP-Link Deco W6000 Setup

The TP-Link Deco W6000 is a leading model of the long lab, a much-lauded Wi-Fi 6 mesh system that in my testing impressively delivers — next to traditional router systems that were popular in 2019 — in terms of its easy setup, seamless roaming as well as speed and coverage that we got those of the older systems.
